Bird Sightings:

About Flock Together

Flock Together is a birdwatching collective founded in 2020 to reimagine who nature is for and how we experience it. What began as a response to the underrepresentation of people of colour in outdoor spaces has grown into an internationally recognised community movement that uses birdwatching as a gateway to connection, joy, and belonging.

The role

We deliver free monthly community birdwatching and nature walks for our ever-growing community, rooted in our commitment to challenging the underrepresentation of people of colour in outdoor and environmental spaces.

Reporting to Flock's Founder, the Community Walks Producer owns the operational delivery of these walks end-to-end, ensuring they are a safe, well-run event on the day.

You'll build and run the systems that let a walk of any size go smoothly, and you'll develop the volunteer team that makes that possible.

Roles & responsibilities

Planning

  • Plan monthly walks, including selecting locations, confirming volunteer team, co-developing walk plans and activities with volunteers, the Flock Team, and occasionally landowners and environmental partners including the RSPB, London Wildlife Trust, and Royal Parks
  • Coordinate volunteer-led recces, complete risk assessments scaled to expected group size, and communicate safeguarding and risk mitigation protocols across the team
  • Collaborate with the Creative Lead to publicise walks and create sign-up forms
  • Distribute participant bursaries and manage the application process

Production & delivery

  • Own on-the-day production of walks: crowd management, time-keeping across the group, and real-time problem-solving
  • Run pre-walk briefings so volunteers knows their role, position, and protocols before the walk starts
  • Ensure safeguarding concerns, complaints, and incident reports are followed up on promptly and appropriately
  • Ensure feedback forms are completed by participants post-walk
  • Collaborating with photographers, ensuring smooth delivery of content

Volunteer development

  • Coordinate volunteer training, including Safeguarding, Outdoor First Aid, and Walk Leadership
  • Support volunteers to claim expenses

Experience and skills

Essential

  • Experience managing events of 200+ individuals (walk-leading experience is a benefit but not essential)
  • Experience managing a team of staff or volunteers
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Experience developing risk assessments
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the confidence to support and motivate a volunteer team
  • Calm, decisive under pressure, with the ability to adapt a plan in real time
  • Comfortable working independently and managing multiple moving parts with minimal day-to-day oversight
  • Safeguarding awareness

Desirable

  • Ornithological and ecological background or interest
  • Safeguarding and or Outdoor First Aid training
  • Experience running grant-funded programmes
  • Experience evaluating programmes and collecting impact data

Practicalities

  • Training will be provided as needed
  • Walks take place across in London; some weekend and early-morning availability will be needed on walk dates

How to apply

Please send a CV and a short covering note (max one page) outlining your relevant experience to hello@flocktogether.world. We particularly encourage applications from people of colour and those with lived experience of the barriers we exist to address.
